Thermal stresses caused by uneven cooling can easily break glass containers. Explain why Pyrex, a glass with a small coefficient of linear expansion is less susceptible?
The linear expansion coefficient is a measure of much the material expands when heated by a certain amount. Because glass is a poor conductor of heat, can be much hotter in some than in others. Thus, part can be extended more than another, which tends to make folding the entire dish. Since glass is not very flexible, the resulting stress is likely to break. If there are fewer difference in the expansion of different parts, due to a lower ratio, there is less force trying to bend.
