The Story Behind Senseo and the Douwe Egberts Corporation

It was a match made in heaven, at least if your heaven includes wonderful coffee. When Douwe Egberts, in the world coffee roaster second largest, has partnered with Royal Philips Electronics, one of the world's leading innovators in electronic devices, the result had to be sensational. The Senseo coffee pod system is the product of a partnership between two world leaders in their field with a pool.

Egbert Douwes opened a small shop in Joure, Netherlands back in 1753. De Witte I sell coffee, tea and snuff to the common people, and was a moderate success. In 1780, his son joined the family business and together, they expanded their holdings, adding more stores across the region.

The company prospered and continued to grow throughout the Netherlands, but it was not until the mid-20th century that spread beyond the borders of their homeland. In 1948, Marcilla began selling coffee, tea and snuff in Belgium. Over the next twenty years, the company said sales in Belgium, France and Spain. In 1978, the company was acquired by international food company Sara Lee. Since then, Sara Lee and Douwe Egberts has become the largest coffee roaster in the world. Familiarly known as Sara Lee / DE, the company is a subsidiary of Sara Lee and employs more than 26,000 people worldwide.

Douwe Egberts brands Pickwick include tea, coffee, Douwe Egberts, Piazza d'Oro espresso, Cafitesse, Pilao coffee and, of course, the Senseo system. Sara Lee sells its products in nearly 200 countries. Sara Lee brands are Sara Lee, Earth Grains, Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean, Ball Park, Bimbo, Kiwi, Ambi Pur, Sanex, and of course, Marcilla.

Royal Philips Electronics

In the Netherlands in 1891, Gerard Philips founded a small electronics company focused on the manufacture of light bulbs technical and other electronic equipment. In the 1920's, the company had begun to expand its product line and make a name for himself as an innovator in the field of electronics. In the 1920's, began to manufacture vacuum tubes, the acquisition of shares in Germany and the UK subsidiaries. In 1939, Philips began marketing its electric shaver, which is sold in the U.S. as Norelco, and has become the flagship of the division of care personal.

A Beautiful Partnership

In 2001, Douwe Egberts partnered with Philips to enter the Senseo system, the coffee system into individual portions using a patented pad brewing for coffee and other hot drinks. The Senseo was introduced first time in February 2001 in the Netherlands, and became available in the U.S. in 2004.

The system uses a patented coffee pod (called a cushion in some countries) which contains a premeasured amount of coffee or drink mixes, and conforms to the coffeemaker. The brewer heats the water at the correct temperature and distributes the drink after brewing. The main innovations in the Senseo was the only beer cup system and use the platform of coffee.

In 1998, Sara Lee / DE in Belgium applied for a patent to protect the use of coffee pad system. The patent was challenged after the Senseo coffee maker hit the market and competitors realized that the patent prevented them from making coffee pods. The patent was successfully challenged in court in Belgium. From 2004, year that the Senseo was introduced in the U.S., other companies have the legal right to make and sell the coffee pods that fit the Senseo system. In addition, several manufacturers of pods on the market allow consumers to make their own coffee pods. This allows flexibility in making coffee or tea of your choice using system Senseo brewing.
