Cleaning Cast Iron Cookware Rust

Heavy Cast Iron Skillet – best used for? and why?
“I was cleaning the attic of my family home and found a lot of mygrandmothers things. Most of it has rusted, but I was able to save a few items. I found some very large kitchen – like iron pans and pots material, etc. .. I usually use non-stick cookware and even those are quite old and now is not nonstick, it’s more like stickon !!!… my questions are: 1. Cast iron skillet is best used for? 2. How do you keep the meat from sticking to the frying pan?”
Cast iron skillets are best for frying chicken, all other meats, fried eggs, vegetables … in fact almost anything. They are very good, retain heat well and will continue to cook food gently when removed from the heat. To remove rust, get off the loose material with a scouring pad and then (as explained in the video below) use an onion! Apparently it gets the rust of almost anything!
Once you have removed all the rust give the pans a good rinse and dry them by placing them on a gentle heat source for a few minutes until they are completely dry or use a paper towel.
To keep the pans rust free and to provide a good base for cooking (and preventing sticking) they now need to be “seasoned”. This is simply pouring a very small amount of cooking oil in the pan and wiping it round with a paper towel until the whole surface inside has a light coating. Store it like this until the next time you use it. Every Time after using it wash it clean and repeat the seasoning process. With time it produces a really good hassle free surface from which to cook from.
