The problem with gluten?
In the bread aisle of the supermarket, where I was looking for a dry ingredient kit for my breadmaker, literally half of the products were labeled as "gluten." gluten-free bread mix. gluten-free pancake mix. gluten free muffin mix. Call me ignorant, but … What's wrong with gluten? I know some people do not tolerate it, but thought this was only a small proportion of the population in general. It recently been discovered to have links with certain diseases or symptoms related to physics? Something you should know?
I have the disease Celiac that about one in every eighty have in the UK. In some parts of Ireland is one in three. Gluten is also associated with a number of other health problems and, recently, the BMJ (British Medical Journal) published a report called "gluten sensitivity: a many headed hydra" sub-title "Increased responsiveness to gluten is not confined to the gut," which highlights a number of other conditions associated with gluten sensitivity. These are diseases nerve and arthritis, as well as the usual digestive tract and skin conditions. As a celiac I wish half the products were labeled "gluten free. Gluten is found in some foods that would not really expect it. I was in Iceland yesterday and gluten found in frozen vegetables, ice cream, yogurt and a number of other things. One has to ask "Why?". I also ound that most of the counter remedies contain gluten and my local hospital, even paracetamol has gluten in it. The gluten-free diet is not easy and is costly. But if I do it in one error that I can be in the bathroom for several days and have even been taken to hospital when I went into shock celiac. It is not something to be taken lightly.
