Coffee Maker Fungus
Mould or fungus is a problem that crops up in Coffee Makers from time to time whether you have a coffee filter machine or a coffee percolator, particularly if they have been left standing unused for a while. While most of these naturally occurring moulds are harmless you certainly do not want to ingest them as some can be injurious to your health.
If the mould occurs on the outside of the coffee making machine to remove it is simply a matter of washing it down with some hot water containing a little added liquid detergent. Add a drop or two of lemon juice just to complete the cleansing process and be careful not to get the plug or electrical connections wet. Dry the exterior well afterwards.
If there is mould in the interior chamber, sometimes sealed so you can’t get to it, this is not difficult to solve either. The first method is to dissolve two tablespoons of baking soda in some hot water and then fill your coffee maker’s water reservoir with it and allow it to run on its normal coffee making cycle (without coffee grounds in it of course!). Dispose of the result when it percolates through and stops.
Repeat if you feel that not everything has gone. Baking soda has a neutral PH balance so there is no danger of harming your coffee machine.
The second way of disposing of mould is to dissolve white vinegar 80/20 with water (80% vinegar, 20% cold water) and fill your water reservoir and follow the same procedure as above.
The added advantage of using vinegar is that it will also dissolve some of the calcium carbonate build up on the water heating mechanism or their surroundings. This is a serious problem in hard water areas where a monthly flush through with the above mixture will keep it working efficiently and prevent calcium build up.
Lastly, using either of the above methods rinse the machine through again, once adding the juice of one lemon to cleanse and deodorize it and finally once with just clean cold water.
Your coffee machine should now be ready to start brewing first class coffee once more – just don’t leave it standing too long again unloved and neglected!
